Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (or drones) are used in areas that are dangerous to the community. They have been known to be used to interfere with flying operations during bush fire emergencies, flying near the flight paths of commercial aircraft and smuggling contraband into prisons and military operations. Hielamon is to provide a tool to prevent these unwanted intrusions.
The Hielamon prototype is a handheld device that is under development by Codarra and has been demonstrated to detect and deter a drone. Hielamon has been developed to provide a very practical, lightweight hand held device that is light enough to be carried by anybody.
Hielamon has been developed into a working functional prototype with the two basic functions of “Detect Drone” and “Deter Drone”. The system has been completed to prototype stage and currently has the ability to counter one class of drone. To counter all drones requires research into the protocols used by a number of drones and a determination of their RF signature by recognition of the modulation type that is used.
RESEARCH TO BE CONDUCTED
Drones emanate a variety of electrical signals by which they can be detected. The research involves testing and modelling the radio communications to establish a library of characteristics.
How can we detect a specific drone? How can we differentiate between a friendly drone and an unwanted drone? How can we deter it from intruding into our space and send it home?
We are looking for a PhD student with the following skills:
Mathematics, Matlab, and code in Python
Experience in electronic engineering
Document the characteristics of a number of specific drones in collaboration with other Codarra engineers.
Provide algorithms that demodulate the received signals to determine the type of drone.
Provide support to the electronic design team to ensure that the system meets all processing and other radio requirements.
Review the performance of the Hielamon product and develop novel ways to increase the range of its receiver and transmitter noting the constraints of size and weight minimisation.
The algorithms will be incorporated into the Hielamon product.
The Intern will support the Codarra team to conduct field testing with the prototypes so we can validate the algorithms.
The intern will receive $3,000 per month of the internship, usually in the form of stipend payments.
It is expected that the intern will primarily undertake this research project during regular business hours, spending at least 80% of their time on-site with the industry partner. The intern will be expected to maintain contact with their academic mentor throughout the internship either through face-to-face or phone meetings as appropriate.
The intern and their academic mentor will have the opportunity to negotiate the project’s scope, milestones and timeline during the project planning stage.
