Measurement Automation for Device Testing

Deteqt Pty Ltd

Duration: 3-months
Start Date: October 2026
Location: Sydney
Scholarship: $20,000

About the Company

Deteqt is an Australian deep-tech quantum sensing company spun out of the University of Sydney and backed by Main Sequence Ventures. It develops diamond-on-chip quantum magnetometers based on nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centre technology, delivering field-deployable, room-temperature, full-vector magnetic measurements at chip scale — targeting defence navigation, mineral exploration and autonomous systems. The team works across research, engineering, commercial partnerships and product development, and is currently building an ASCA-funded project for GPS-denied navigation

Project Objective

Testing Deteqt’s quantum magnetometers currently relies on manual processes, which limits consistency and throughput. This project will design and implement an automated testing framework that enables repeatable, at-scale characterisation of device performance — forming the basis for future quality-control processes as Deteqt scales to meet defence supply-chain requirements, where sensor variability is unacceptable.

Project Tasks

  • Survey existing manual testing procedures and identify automation opportunities.
  • Develop Python-based instrument control and automated test routines, interfacing standard lab instruments such as oscilloscopes, signal generators and multimeters.
  • Validate the automated framework against manual results and document the testing protocol.
  • Deliverables: working code, documentation and a final test report.

Intern Skills

  • Python programming and hands-on lab work.
  • Experience interfacing with laboratory instruments or hardware.
  • Familiarity with data-acquisition or test-automation frameworks (desirable).
  • Detail-oriented, methodical, with strong documentation habits.
  • No security clearance required.

How to apply
