About the Company
Navantia Australia is a leading provider of naval shipbuilding, systems integration, sustainment and advanced technology solutions for the Royal Australian Navy. Marintec is a maritime research and innovation institute established through a strategic partnership between the University of Technology Sydney and Navantia Australia, developing advanced digital technologies that enhance intelligent asset management, operational readiness and data-driven decision-making for complex maritime platforms.
Project Objective
Future Defence operations will involve a mix of crewed and autonomous systems across multiple domains. This project investigates how data from maritime platforms can be analysed to generate fleet-level insights not possible by looking at individual vessels alone — identifying common patterns, behaviours and lessons across different assets so that insights from one platform can inform the operation and management of others. The intern will develop and demonstrate a prototype approach for adaptive fleet analytics that supports a continuous learning loop, improved decision-making and future integration of heterogeneous assets across maritime, aerial and underwater domains.
Project Tasks
- Week 1- 3: Review available data sources, investigate approaches for generating fleet-level insights beyond individual vessel analysis. Output: Fleet analytics concept document and identified data opportunities.
- Week 4-8: Develop data analysis methods and visualisations to identify patterns and relationships across platforms. Output: Working prototype demonstrating fleet-level insights.
Intern Skills
- Python — strong proficiency; experience developing software prototypes and rapidly testing new concepts.
- AI/ML frameworks and data visualisation; familiarity with version control (GitHub) and containerisation (Docker) beneficial.
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills; adaptable; takes ownership of tasks; manages time effectively.
