About the Company
METASORB is an advanced-materials company developing and commercialising PFAS-free, ultra-durable surface-protection coatings for critical industrial and defence-relevant assets. Its two-layer platform combines a cross-linked polymer base layer with a customisable nanocomposite top layer to deliver water, oil and microbial repellency, abrasion resistance, corrosion protection and reduced fouling — designed for harsh environments where coating durability, maintainability and asset availability are critical.
Project Objective
This internship will improve the reproducibility, scale-up and spray-process reliability of METASORB’s PFAS-free nanocomposite coating. The intern will investigate practical causes of batch inconsistency and translate findings into controlled preparation, batch-screening and coating workflows — working toward a high batch-success rate and validated spray application. The work supports lighter, durable protective systems across air, marine and land platforms, aligned with SDIP sustainment priorities and DSTG corrosion and coatings interests.
Project Tasks
- Identify key variables affecting batch reproducibility (reagent handling, moisture, mixing, temperature, viscosity and storage).
- Produce repeatable small-to-mid-scale batches suitable for coating trials.
- Develop a documented workflow for batch comparison (viscosity, wetting behaviour, coating appearance, sprayability and basic durability screening).
- Support spray-process optimisation across substrates (aluminium, steel and polymer).
- Prepare representative coated samples for feasibility studies and partner engagement.
- Deliver a final technical report.
Intern Skills
- Organic or polymer chemistry
- Experience with moisture-sensitive or solvent-based reactions.
- Understanding of polyurethane, acrylic, cross-linked polymer or colloidal systems.
- Practical lab skills: fume-hood work, accurate weighing, liquid handling, controlled heating/stirring and safe solvent handling.
- Familiarity with coatings, rheology, contact-angle testing, FTIR, NMR, DLS or microscopy is beneficial but not essential.
