About the Company
Nautic Technologies is an Australian sovereign defence technology company developing the Smart Buoyancy Control Device (Smart BCD) — an electronically controlled underwater buoyancy management system designed to enhance diver safety, precision and mission effectiveness. The Smart BCD integrates automated buoyancy control, intelligent depth management and wireless pre-dive configuration through a Mobile Companion Application (MCA). Nautic is progressing the technology from an advanced prototype toward certification and commercialisation for defence, commercial and public safety diving applications, with a strong focus on sovereign manufacturing and operational capability.
Project Objective
The Smart BCD has direct applications across ADF Defence diving, explosive ordnance disposal, clearance diving and specialist underwater operations. This internship will support the engineering activities required to progress the Smart BCD from an advanced prototype toward independent certification and higher Technology Readiness Levels (TRL). Working alongside the Lead Mechatronics Engineer, the intern will review findings arising from independent testing and certification activities, investigate identified engineering issues, implement design improvements and assist with validation testing — directly contributing to the product’s reliability, manufacturability and readiness for commercial and ADF deployment.
Project Tasks
- Weeks 1–3: Review independent certification reports; identify and prioritise engineering actions; develop an engineering action register and prioritised work packages.
- Weeks 4–8: Investigate root causes of identified issues; implement hardware and software improvements; prototype modifications; undertake verification testing to confirm issue closure. Output: updated prototype, resolved engineering findings and verification results.
- Weeks 9–12: Conduct validation testing; update engineering documentation; close certification actions; support TRL advancement activities. Output: validation report, updated technical documentation and recommendations supporting certification and commercial readiness.
Intern Skills
- Mechanical, Mechatronics, Electrical or Robotics Engineering; CAD (SolidWorks preferred).
- Embedded systems or electronics; basic programming (C/C++, Python or similar); testing, validation and technical documentation.
- Engineering problem-solving; data analysis; practical engineering mindset with attention to detail.
- Self-motivated; strong analytical thinking; able to work both collaboratively and independently; genuine interest in defence technologies.
- Australian citizenship required; NDA required due to commercially sensitive and Defence-related IP. All IP developed during the internship remains the property of Nautic Technologies. Publication requires prior written approval.
