PILOT PROJECTS 19-20

ABOUT THE DIN

Miniaturised Active Radar with Integrated Communication

DIN Funding:
$128,000

Project objective:

The research team is conducting a pilot study to enable long-range and beyond line-of-sight (BLOS) joint communication and radar sensing, allowing early warning for land forces and incoming air vehicles, as well as a directional high bandwidth link within the combat team.

Problem:

In hostile conditions, forward-deployed troops cannot rely on satellites, aircraft or helicopters to provide long-range early warning for incoming threats. A small unmanned aerial system (UAS) equipped with active electronically scanned phased array RADAR could provide a combat team with beyond-line-of-sight detection of hostile forces as well as a local directional high-bandwidth communications link.

Outcome:

An integrated communication and radar sensing solution based on minituarised active array can provide Defence with strategic capabilities, at significantly reduced size, weight and cost, while almost doubled spectrum efficiency.
