What is DIN Internship Program?
DIN Internship program is designed to create partnerships between industry and universities by placing expert PhD students to work on industry-focused projects for three months. DIN will provide a $10,000 stipend to a student for the internship duration.
Who is eligible to participate?
Any size companies, including small-to-medium enterprises and defence primes, are eligible to participate in the program. DIN will support one internship per company.
To be eligible, a company must:
- Have an Australian Business Number and operate in defence relevant area
- Be based in New South Wales
- Submit a project proposal that is defence relevant
- Be able to supervise and mentor an intern for three months
What are company responsibilities?
- Develop a research project that the intern will be working on
- Participate in DIN organised “Speed-dating” event to interview potential interns
- Host, mentor and develop PhD students during the internship
- Submit a short report at the end of the internship
How to apply?
Companies can submit their application to email@example.com.
The application template is available for download here.
What are the next steps?
DIN will review project proposals against the defence relevance selection criteria. Selected companies will be provided with a list of candidates suitable for their projects. Consequently, companies will shortlist candidates who will be interviewed during the “Speed-dating” event. Companies and PhDs will then be matched based on their preferences, required skills and expertise.
Internships can start in November 2023, following the agreement between a company and a university. DIN will transfer the internship allowance to the student’s supervisor, who will arrange the payment for an individual student.
Can DSTG or other Government organisation participate in the internship program?
No, only industry partners are eligible to participate in this round.
What is the Intellectual Property (IP) arrangement?
Project IP created during the internship will stay with the company. Companies should include relevant transfer of IP clauses, relating only to project IP, in any contract which the student signs.
What are the rules around publishing and confidentiality of the projects?
Non-disclosure agreements can be organised between an internship host and a university. All parties need to approve the dissemination of information related to the project before any work may be disseminated.
How much will it cost us to participate in the DIN Internship Program?
A company doesn’t pay any fee to participate in this program. Your contribution will be time spent on student’s mentoring.
