About the Company
Cognitive Advantage is a dynamic and innovative technology solution provider in Canberra with a portfolio of mobile connectivity, secure networking, and distributed computing products.
We are a veteran-owned and operated business driven to solve some of the hardest digital technology challenges facing the nation. Our products are used by defence, emergency services, and public safety organisations around Australia.
Project Objective
Enhance the performance and security of a private 5G standalone network by identifying and evaluating novel technologies for integration into our technology stack.
Cognitive Advantage is working with the Air Force to trial the technology as an air-to-ground communications link for drones operating beyond visual line of sight in remote areas where commercial 4G/5G networks are unavailable. 5G is an ideal technology for this use case as it significantly outperforms typical ‘drone radio’ systems while remaining cheap enough for scaled deployment across large drone fleets.
The intern will work on analysing field trial data, identifying opportunities to enhance the technology, and experimenting with design variations.
Project Tasks
- Research certain specifications in 3GPP Rel 16 and Rel 17 relevant to the military application of our technology.
- Experiment with these features by adapting and extending open-source software running on software-defined radios.
- Develop modelling and simulation techniques for extrapolating the small-scale testbed to large-scale network deployments.
- Design experiments and data capture techniques for quantifying performance using the testbed that can ideally be adapted to later field testing.
Intern Skills
- Software-defined radio programming
- Testbed design and implementation
- Radio frequency engineering
- Modelling and simulation
