Vehicle Images Retrieval and Analysis using Artificial Intelligence

Company: NSW Police Force
Duration: 3-months
Start Date: November 2024
Location: Parramatta
Scholarship: $20,000

About the Company

The New South Wales Police Force is the primary law enforcement agency of the state of New South Wales, Australia. Divided into Police Area Commands for metropolitan areas and Police Districts for regional and country areas, the NSW Police Force consists of more than 400 Police stations and over 18,000 officers, who are responsible for covering an area of 801,600 square kilometres and a population of more than 8.2 million people.

Project Objective

This research aims to enhance vehicle image searching capability within the police force using artificial intelligence techniques.

Objectives:

  • Explore and analyse recent advancements in computer vision techniques for vehicle image search and retrieval.
  • Propose and evaluate an approach for classifying vehicle metadata to improve search accuracy and efficiency.
  • Identify the challenges and limitations of using such an approach in vehicle metadata classification.

 Project Tasks

  • Conduct an extensive literature review to understand the state-of-the-art vehicle image analysis and retrieval techniques.
  • Develop an understanding of the current dataset prepared by the police force, including explanatory data analyses.
  • Identify the best approach for analysing and retrieving vehicle images. This could involve extracting keywords from each vehicle image via building image classification models or building image similarity models.
  • Evaluate the performance of the models using the appropriate metrics. Identify any possible challenges, including ethical considerations.
  • Prepare a comprehensive report documenting the research methodology, findings, and insights. Work on the possibility of disseminating the research findings through academic conferences, workshops, and peer-reviewed journals.

Intern Skills

  • Strong understanding of computer vision and machine learning principles, particularly deep learning.
  • Experience with deep neural networks and frameworks like PyTorch, TensorFlow, or similar.
  • Skills in data processing, cleaning, and transformation
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to document and present research findings.
  • Adapt existing skills to new situations.
  • Research and analyse information to make recommendations based on relevant evidence.
